چکیده

Combetrum petrophilum Retief, which occurs as a small tree in isolated areas of Gauteng Province, is one of approximately 99 species of trees and climbers that comprise the subgenus Combretum in Africa (Stace, 1969, Botanical J. Linnean Soc. 62, 131, Carr, 1988). Fresh leaves were collected from the vicinity of the Strydom tunnel in the summer of 1998 and representative voucher specimens (Nos PRE 17 & 22) were deposited at the National Botanical Institute in Pretoria.

Cardiovascular effects of mollic acid glucoside, a 1α-hydroxycycloartenoid saponin extractive from Combretum molle R Br ex G Don (Combretaceae) leaf

The cardiovascular effects of mollic acid glucoside (MAG), a 1alpha-hydroxycycloartenoid saponin extractive from Combretum molle R Br ex G Don (Combretaceae) leaf, have been investigated in some experimental animal paradigms. The plant extract (MAG, 5-80 microg/ml) produced concentration-dependent, significant (p < 0.05-0.001) negative inotropic and negative chronotropic effects on guinea pig i...

Bioassay-Guided Isolation of Cytotoxic Cycloartane Triterpenoid Glycosides from the Traditionally Used Medicinal Plant Leea indica

Leea indica is a medicinal plant used traditionally to cure cancer. In this study, the cytotoxic compounds of L. indica were isolated using bioassay-guided approach. Two cycloartane triterpenoid glycosides, mollic acid arabinoside (MAA) and mollic acid xyloside (MAX), were firstly isolated from L. indica. They inhibited the growth of Ca Ski cervical cancer cells with IC(50) of 19.21 μM (MAA) an...

Antidiarrheal effects of hydromethanolic extract of Combretum dolichopetalum leaves in mice

Combretum dolichopetalum Engl and Diels (C. dolichopetalum) belonging to the family Combretaceae is commonly known as “achicha nza” (food of the sun bird) in Igboland and “okoso” in Edo Nigeria[1]. It is a scandent shrub or forest liane of deciduous forest, and usually occurs along banks from Sierra Leone to West Cameroon[2]. The leaves and roots are extensively used in ethnomedical practices o...

The Effects of Cholestasis and Cirrhosis on Gastric Acid and Pepsin Secretions in Rat: Involvement of Nitric Oxide

Objective(s) The liver has major role in the organism homeostasis, interactions with other systems, synthesis and metabolism of bile production, drug detoxification and hormone inactivation. Cholestasis can be defined as an impairment of the bile flow which can lead to hepatocytes necrosis and finally cirrhosis. Some studies reported a gastric acid secretion reduction in cirrhotic subjects, wh...

Effects of Chemical Treatments (Iron, Zinc and Salicylic Acid) and Soil Water Potential on Steviol Glycosides of Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni.)

The most important characteristic of stevia is its high sweetness with zero calories which is due to the presence of Steviol glycosides (SVglys). This research aims to address the effect of salicylic acid (SA) and microelements viz. iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) under different soil water potentials (-0.5, -3.5, -6.5 and -10 atm) on the production of SVglys and total sugar content in the leaves o...
